Central Java's Semarang (COMET News) -
On the opening day of competition in the 2022 ASEAN Para Games, which was conducted on Monday at Jatidiri Stadium in this city, the Indonesian para-swimming team was able to win seven gold medals.
Aris Wibawa won the inaugural gold medal in the men's 100-meter breaststroke SB7 event, clocking in at the quickest time of 1 minute 34.46 seconds.
Wibawa triumphed against Khouy Koy of Cambodia, who finished in 1 minute 39.54 seconds, and Ho Van Dao of Vietnam, who finished in 1 minute 47.36 seconds.
By defeating his Vietnamese and Thai rivals in the men's 100 m freestyle S9 event with a timing of 1 minute 4.72 seconds, Rino Saputra won the second gold medal.
In the men's 100 m freestyle S8 event, Zaki Zulkarnain won Indonesia's third gold with a time of 1 minute, 3.50 seconds, besting Thailand and Vietnam.
Meliana Ratih Pratama stole the fifth gold in the women's 50 m backstroke S14, while Tangklisan Steven Sualang won the fourth gold in the men's 50 m backstroke S10.
The 4x100 m mixed style (49 points) and 4x100 m freestyle (47 points) relays, respectively, took home the sixth and seventh gold in the relay division (34 points).
The Indonesian para-swimming team attempted to win 10 medals, but only managed to win gold in three of the competitions, according to coordinator Dimin.
Seven gold medals, nine silver medals, and seven bronze medals make up the entire amount of medals awarded today, he said.
The squad missed out on winning gold in three competitions because their rivals fared better despite the COVID-19 pandemic's setback.
However, Dimin expressed optimism that the para-swimming team will surpass its goal of winning 27 gold medals since there can be unexpected victories in less important competitions.
